Do you have aging parents who aren’t getting around their home quite as easily as they used to? It may be time to evaluate their home for hazards that could lead to falls.Universal design senior living

In-home care givers are uniquely aware of potential problems that seniors can face. And as architects we are uniquely aware of how universal design can be used to lessen their risk of falls and to improve their experience and access in their own homes.

On December 28, 2010, Adeste In-Home Care in Centennial, Colorado published this article on their blog. It’s nice to see design being recognized as a tool available to help our aging family members.

As baby boomers begin to approach their 70’s, how to age gracefully is popping up in a variety of industries. And one of the largest industries to take a strong interest is real estate – how do more people stay in their homes longer, and stay out of assisted living and nursing facilities? The answer may be in Universal Design – the basic skills of creating structures that are safe and convenient, no matter what your age or ability.

Universal design means building an attractive, stylish space that appeals to everyone in the family. It makes it easier to live in throughout the different phases of your life, and does so in a way that doesn’t scream “clinical” or “institutional”.
