2017: Dallas Morning News

HPD co-founder, Laura Davis, is featured in a May 24 Dallas Morning News article about the latest trends in outdoor furniture and décor.

For many Texas homeowners, exterior living areas have become extensions of indoor ones. Outdoor spaces like patios are being used year-round rather than just during spring and summer.  As Davis says in the article, “It’s about a place to come home to at the end of the day where people can dine with family and friends.”

Davis, who specializes in interior design, observes that homeowners are choosing angular, clean-lined quasi-Scandinavian look in warmer – rather than cooler – shades of gray and beige. Accessories like pillows are bright and colorful, in water-reminiscent blue tones, light greens and corals.

The new merging of indoor and outdoor spaces reflects exciting possibilities to create unique visual statements. Combining different materials is all the rage: homeowners pair wicker chairs, for example, with an aluminum table or a stone fire pit.

Yet, as Davis sees it, this interior design eclecticism is really just a natural outgrowth of design trends she sees as an architect. “It’s fun to mix it up; a natural extension of the architecture and design worlds,” she says.

The article includes advice on what to consider when investing in outdoor furniture and accessories. It even includes care tips on how to keep chairs and tables looking good all year long!

2015: American Institute of Architects – Top Young Architect

Every year AIA Dallas (American Institute of Architects Dallas) seeks out the top 10 architects who have been practicing less than 10 years in the Dallas area. They conduct the “10 Under Ten Competition” which provides “a platform where all licensed architects, from sole practitioner to firm associates, with ten years of experience or less, can be recognized by their peers for their innovation, leadership, and emerging practices that continue to shape our community.”  The competition has three purposes:

  • To encourage professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups.
  • To build a network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute.
  • To make AIA membership valuable to young Architects and to develop the future leadership of the profession.

This year’s competition not only drew from the Dallas area but was open to all young architects in Texas.

2015: American Institute of Architects Highlight

hpd project highlighted by american institute of architects

A recently completed renovation of a Dallas area home overseen by Larry Paschall of HPD Architecture has been highlighted by the American Institute of Architects and posted to their AIA Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) website. The purpose of CRAN is to “develop knowledge and information to benefit architects who are engaged in, or who are interested in learning more about, custom residential practice.”

Larry’s Stanwood Residence project was a complete interior and exterior renovation of a 1961 residence with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It is roughly 2,200 square feet.

The details of the renovation are as follows from the review:

Interior of the home was taken back to stud and reframed to create a new Entry, combined Living and Dining room, new Kitchen, new Coat closet, new Laundry, larger Master Closet, and new Master Bath. Remaining spaces were updated including new flooring, paint, and light fixtures. Plumbing and electrical were also brought up to code. Remaining aluminum windows were replaced with thermally broken steel windows.

The home’s exterior had the existing stone accent wall and existing siding replaced with shou sugi ban vertical tongue and groove planks. Brick and remaining wood soffits were painted to compliment the stain on the new siding. Composition shingles were replaced with anodized bronze standing seam metal roofing.

The project was completed in November of 2014 with Sardone Construction as the contractor.

2013: AIA Dallas – The Best of Small Firms 2013

hpd architecture selected by aia dallas for “under the radar – the best of small firms 2013”

HPD Architecture, LLC has been selected by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Dallas chapter for the “Under the Radar – The Best of Small Firms 2013.” The honor recognizes outstanding design work by Dallas’ up and coming small firms and sole practitioners. Submissions are reviewed by a panel of three judges who then determine the winners.

AIA Dallas Small Firms Roundtable hosted a reception at the Dallas Center for Architecture on Monday, October 14, 2013 to celebrate this year’s “Under the Radar” recipients. HPD’s winning body of work is currently exhibited at the Center and will also be displayed at the Texas Society of Architect’s Convention in Fort Worth, November 7-9, 2013.

HPD was founded in 2008 by principals Holly Hall, AIA, CAPS, Larry Paschall, AIA, and Laura Davis, AIA, IFDA. The firm specializes in residential and commercial architecture. The trio of architects’ combined diversified talents, perspectives, and experiences provide unique and well-conceived design solutions.

The firm’s honored work for the “Under the Radar – The Best of Small Firms 2013” recognition included three client projects:

A long-time client wanted “update finishes” for her condominium that had a “tired” 70s look to showcase the residence’s spectacular mountain views. The anticipated updates actually evolved into a complete renovation of the home. Having worked together on seven projects during their 30-year relationship, Holly knew exactly what the client liked and desired.

HPD’s client was enthusiastic about transitioning from the home where her children had grown to a penthouse in the downtown area. Working with an un-built space, Holly created the look to reflect the owner’s desire to have a livable environment to showcase an extensive art collection. All areas of the residence were designed to open to spectacular views and flow onto the terrace.

The renovation of a 1972 home transformed the structure and aesthetics from dated ranch-style to contemporary. The client dreamed of a home where she could proudly entertain guests and enjoy her art and collections from her travels. A special element throughout the project was the intuitive connection Laura shared with her client. During a recent walk-through of the nearly completed renovation, the client stated with a smile, “I can hardly remember what it looked like before.” Evidence of a successful transformation for the home and for her.

“We are excited to be recognized by AIA Dallas’ highly-respected jury members for the ‘Under the Radar’ exhibition,” said Holly Hall, AIA, CAPS. “As 2013 is the inaugural year for this competition, it is truly an honor to be included among the noted small firms in the Dallas area.”

Laura Davis, AIA, IFDA, HPD Architecture Celebrates Launch of Member Marketing Toolkit for International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA)

davis led marketing task force and committee to develop beneficial materials for ifda international membership

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) February 08, 2013 – Laura Davis, AIA, IFDA, HPD Architecture LLC, celebrates the launch of a new marketing toolkit for members of the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA). The toolkit reflects the survey results of IFDA members and the collaborative efforts of the organization’s Marketing Task Force and Marketing Committee under the leadership of Davis.

In 2011 at the annual meeting of the IFDA national and chapter leadership, Davis volunteered to lead the task force and, subsequently the marketing committee. “While local chapters of IFDA had conducted respective marketing activities, the overall organization wanted to enhance its efforts by developing a comprehensive marketing plan. Having experienced success with marketing at the grassroots level in my own business, I wanted to spearhead these efforts,” said Davis.

Davis and her fellow marketing committee members were instrumental in securing for IFDA The Communication Solutions Group, a marketing and public relations firm, which conducted an extensive research survey of the IFDA membership in June 2012. The Communication Solutions Group subsequently helped to design and develop materials for the toolkit.

“It was critical that we had an accurate view of what our members needed before developing a marketing plan,” shared Davis. “Our members wanted to know the best practices to achieve success in marketing their products and services powerfully, yet cost-effectively. In direct response to the survey, we created a comprehensive package for our members to use in growing their businesses and subsequently serving their clients.”

Available to IFDA members only, the materials in the marketing toolkit address:

  • Setting realistic marketing goals
  • Developing and promoting a unique selling point and distinction as an IFDA member
  • Defining and accessing a target market
  • Maximizing messages through public relations and speaking engagements
  • Cost-cutting strategies for direct mail and advertising
  • Using a website and social media to support marketing
  • Tracking the success of marketing efforts

Recently, IFDA presented a webinar to unveil a new marketing toolkit that is being made available to the organization’s international membership. The webinar entitled, “Mega Marketing on a Shoestring Budget,” was conducted by Leza Raffel, founder and president, The Communication Solutions Group.

“It is truly an achievement that we could organize and produce this marketing package in just one year,” stated Davis, who is also the president of the Texas Chapter of the IFDA. “We are incredibly excited to see this toolkit in the hands of our members.” Davis was recognized for her leadership as head of the Marketing Committee by Janet Stevenson, president, IFDA 2011-2012,at the 2012 Annual IFDA Business Meeting held in Philadelphia.

Laura Davis, AIA, IFDA and principal with HPD Architecture LLC was honored by the Dallas Business Journal with the noted 40 Under Forty award for 2012. Davis was recognized along with the other recipients during a reception and award ceremony at the Granada Theater in Dallas. The award winners are featured in a special section in the August 24th issue of the Dallas Business Journal.

The Dallas Business Journal’s annual 40 Under Forty awards honor executives and entrepreneurs who demonstrate “top of the line” excellence in their respective professions and personally demonstrate a commitment to the North Texas community. The winners were selected by judges representing the publication’s editorial staff and a panel of previous 40 Under Forty honorees.

Davis currently serves as vice president and director of marketing for HPD Architecture. As a principal, registered architect, and registered interior designer, she leads the way in which the firm approaches new projects, cultivates clients, and presents to and involves itself with the community. “What a privilege and an honor to be part of such a distinguished group of honorees,” said Davis. “Everyone I met was gracious and genuine and clearly radiated why they are successful in their respective professions.”

“Moreover, I felt the support from each person in the room and the true excitement for all of us in receiving this wonderful recognition,” added Davis.
