The two-story L-shaped Hutsell House was built in

The two-story L-shaped Hutsell House was built in 1930 and designed by owner/architect Clifford D. Hutsell. The home is an example of the Spanish Eclectic style (also called Spanish Mediterranean) that was popular from 1915-1940 in the southwestern states. This style utilized common features and details found in Spanish architecture. According to Realtor.com, the Hutsell House is recognized as “one of the most architecturally significant homes in Dallas”.⁣
⁣
The home boasts of a decorative well, elaborate exterior metal work, a round turret entry, a multi-colored Spanish tile roof, round clay tile pipes used as gable vents, a parabolic arched stained glass window, an octagonal tiled fountain, mosaic tile flooring, rough-hewn wood balconies and porches, terracotta colored concrete windows, and exterior canvas drapes. The interior includes ceiling murals of nature scenes, beveled mirrors, plaster logs, and decorative ceiling beams. An interesting tidbit—the Hutsell children kept baby alligators in the well until the alligators grew too big!⁣

The Hutsell house was built at a cost of $10,000. It is estimated that the home is currently valued at nearly $2 million. The home was designated a Dallas Landmark in 2005.⁣

#TBT O’Neil Ford, of Ford and Swank Architects designed the Bromberg/Patterson house in 1939. ⁣
⁣
The Texas regionalist/modern-style home was vastly different from the contemporary ‘European’ mansions being built in East Dallas in the late 1930s. Not the pretentious type, the Brombergs sought a house that would respect and accentuate the natural Texas climate, environment, and heritage surrounding it. Ford delivered, and the home became the Bromberg’s private respite from the city. ⁣
⁣
Interestingly, each component of the two-story brick home adjoins to an outdoor porch. Each were positioned so its inhabitants could enjoy the late afternoon and evening light, catch welcome breezes, and experience alternative dining and lounging locations. The home was featured in a September 1951 House and Garden magazine article aptly titled, ‘In this house, four porches invite outdoor living year-round.’⁣
⁣
Dan and Gail Patterson purchased the home in 2000 and oversaw its restorative work in 2002-03. The Brombergs and the Pattersons were later honored by Preservation Dallas, and were given a Preservation Award for their preservation efforts. The home was designated a Dallas Landmark in 2003 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.⁣

The construction cost of the Bromberg/Patterson House was $28,000 in 1939. Recent estimates value the home around $1.3 million. ⁣

#TBT This Queen Anne style Victorian Eclectic home

#TBT This Queen Anne style Victorian Eclectic home on Marsalis in the Oak Cliff neighborhood was built in 1888-89 and is referred to as the “Betterton House”. It is one of the oldest large Victorian homes left in Dallas. ⁣
⁣
Charles and Maud Betterton purchased the lot where the home stands in July 1888. The home was built at the core point of the development of Oak Cliff. It boasts of decorative fish scale shingles, sunburst decoration, two brick fireplaces, and a projecting bay. ⁣
⁣
Dr. William Browne purchased the home in 1935, and a 2-story addition was constructed to accommodate a doctor’s office. The home was used as a boarding house in the post war years, had many owners and periods of vacancy throughout the years, and underwent interior and exterior restorations in 1993. The Betterton House was nominated to be a historical landmark in the summer of 1984. ⁣
