#TBT The iconic Adam Hats building at 2700 Canton

#TBT The iconic Adam Hats building at 2700 Canton has a long and significant Dallas history. It was designed by Architect John Graham Sr. and built for the Ford Motor Company in 1913-14 in what they referred to as a, “strategic trade center” location. It served as a Model T production plant until 1925 and helped to shape industrial architecture and make Dallas a gateway to regional industry. In the last year that this building was used by Ford as an assembly plant (1924), nearly 47,000 Model T cars had been assembled and Ford had become Dallas’ largest employer. ⁣

The 94,000 sq. ft. building was originally built as a four-story rectangular industrial structure with a basement. It was constructed of reinforced concrete and veneered with common brick, face brick, terra cotta and tile trim. The main entrance had a decorative metal canopy and large showroom windows. ⁣
⁣
Peaslee-Gaulbert Corporation purchased the building from Ford in 1942, and Adam Hats, a subsidiary of Miller Brothers Hat Co., Inc. purchased the building in 1959 and remained there until 1986. The building went through a series of owners and bankruptcies before it was purchased in 1996 by Westdale Properties. It was renovated into the 90 loft apartments featuring modern themes and old warehouse charm, that still exist today. ⁣

#TBT This two-story duplex is an excellent example

#TBT This two-story duplex is an excellent example of the Spanish Eclectic style prevalent in the southwest between 1915 and 1940. Designed by local self-taught architect C. D. Hutsell in 1931, the upper and lower units sold separately making the duplex very cost-effective. Each level is under 1000 sq. ft. and includes a living room, dining room, bedroom, small bathroom, galley kitchen, and a very interesting feature–chutes to a common exterior incinerator. ⁣
⁣
Some of the duplex’s prominent features include a two-story integral porch, a balcony with turned wooden railing, battened wooden shutters, and a Spanish clay tile roof. Interior features include original wrought iron lamps and sconces, cast plaster fireplaces, red oak hardwood flooring, bright monochrome tile backsplashes, and a small “secret panel” doorway that leads to a back stairwell. Original primary colors and color mixes are prevalent throughout the duplex. ⁣

The Adams-Gullett Duplex has been home to many occupants during its nearly 90-year history, including artists, entrepreneurs, and politicians. The duplex cost $4,000 to construct in 1931 and is currently valued at over $645,000. ⁣
